Autonomous Vehicle Research Lab

Data-driven solutions have become increasingly important in recent years, thanks to the market, industrial and social needs of artificial intelligence. It is appearing in more and more areas of life, from industry to healthcare to end-user solutions. Meeting the demands, the Debreceni University Faculty of Informatics will pay particular attention to data science on both educational and research lines. An important element of this is the Self-Driven Vehicle Research Laboratory, which was established at the faculty and is currently being expanded with the construction of a workshop garage. The rooms together exceed the floor area of 200m2, and we also have an open area of 500m2 to work. Within the framework of the laboratory, we study autonomous vehicles equipped with variable levels of self-driving functions, sensor networks, communications, and the ability to process sensor data for smart cities based on artificial intelligence and build them in model size. The model cars also have a variable track with the same size ratio, which is suitable for modeling smart cities, implementing and analyzing different traffic situations. The purpose of the model environment is to create an opportunity to analyze difficult/hazardous conditions that are risky on a real scale. Such conditions can be foggy weather, slippery road surface, potholes, etc. In addition to the model-scale implementation, we can perform parallel data analysis and data collection in a computer-virtualized environment, supporting broader data analysis and ensuring comparability of virtual data analysis and physical data collection. In the laboratory, we have the equipment needed for design, 3D printing, and construction, as well as the constantly expanding set of sensors, the AI IOT platforms (Nvidia Jetson series, Google Coral, Intel Compute Stick), and computers equipped with modern Nivida GPUs, a self-built liquid-cooled mini HPC including a new NVIDIA DGX100 HPC will also be available in the coming months. The lab is also scheduled to rebuild a full-size self-driving car.
